Car Free Day LI and Long Island Mobility Week Calendar of Activities:
Once again, Car Free Day Long Island is proud to be a part of Long Island Mobility Week, a week-long series of symposiums and activities conducted by Long Island municipalities and organizations that focus on sustainable transportation alternatives. During Long Island Mobility Week (September 14-20th), Long Islanders can take stock of current transportation challenges and our progress towards more sustainable options.
Here are the activities at this point:
Saturday, September 14:
Hempstead Citizen’s Walking Tour: Meet at 11:30 am at 260 Clinton Street, Westbury. Walk will start at noon. 7/10 mile route from 260 Clinton St. to Denton Green Park. Join the LI Transportation Alliance, NY Coalition for Transportation Safety, Long Island Streets, the Ethical Humanist Society of LI and the Village of Hempstead for a pedestrian safety walking tour.
4th Annual Long Island Bike Parade: Meet at 11:30 am at Denton Green Park, 99 Nichols Ct. Hempstead, parade starts at noon. Join the LI Transportation Alliance, NY Coalition for Transportation Safety, Long Island Streets, the Ethical Humanist Society of LI and the Village of Hempstead for the 4th Annual Long Island Bike Parade. Cash prizes will be awarded for the best “bicycle floats”. See Below ** to Register for Free
The Stars and Stripes Festival of the Village of East Rockaway: 4:00 – 10:00 pm, on Main Street, come participate in the Festival’s salute to Car Free Day LI. Come enjoy the rides, games, food trucks, live music and fireworks. A great way to celebrate with the entire family.
Sunday, September 15:
8th Annual Drive Electric Show and Drive, 11 am – 5 pm at Tanner Park, Copiague (Rain date is 9/29). Organized and presented by the Sierra Club. See inside and out of many all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
Monday, September 16:
The Electric Vehicle Transformation: Municipalities and EV’s on LI. Discussion on the ways that LI Municipalities are leading in the proliferation of electric vehicles and critical next steps. 10 am- 12 pm, Sustainability Institute at Molloy College. Hosted by NY Environmental Advocates & Long Island Progressive Coalition. See ** Below to RSVP for Free
Tuesday, September 17:
Car Free Day LI/ Mobililty Week Rally/Press Conference: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. Farmingdale State College Campus Center—all are welcome. Key Long Island leaders will discuss the economic, environmental and health impacts of single occupancy vehicles on Long Island, and encourage students, faculty and the general public to choose more sustainable transportation options by pledging to be car free or car-lite on September 20th for the 7th Annual Car Free Day LI.
Public Hearing on Proposed Suffolk County Transit Service Improvements: 2:30-4:30pm & 5:30-7:30pm. Hauppauge Legislative Auditorium-W.H. Rogers Legislative Building-725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Smithtown. Learn about and provide feedback to Suffolk County on the proposed utilization of increased state aid toward service improvements to the Suffolk County Transit Bus System.
Wednesday, September 18:
Transportation Innovations/NYMTC Shared Mobility Public Workshop: 9:00 am- 12:00 pm at Suffolk County Community College, Grant Campus- Arts & Science Center-Van Nostrand Theatre-1001 Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood. Hosted by the US Green Building Council-LI Sustainable Transportation Committee, Suffolk County Community College and NY Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC). A distinguished panel will provide insight into innovative transportation projects on Long Island and nationwide that are expanding mobility options and providing sustainable transportation alternatives. EV Showcase/Farmers Market: 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, Kennedy Plaza, I West Chester Street, Long Beach. See inside and out of many all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Hosted by City of Long Beach, LI Greenmarket Inc. and Empower Solar.

CAR FREE DAY LI:
Friday, September 20: All over Long Island! Remember to be Car Free or Car Lite. Specific activities being planned so far:
- Wyandanch Village Car Free Day Celebration: 7:00 am – 9:00 am. LIRR train station. Commuters can start their day with free coffee, courtesy of 7-11 Wyandanch Plaza.
- The Village of Sea Cliff: will shut down Sea Cliff Avenue between Central Avenue and Roslyn Avenue from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm --and have a Car Free Day celebration with student art being created, music, raffles, food and vendors. There will be guided walking tours leaving at 5:30 and 6:00 pm, on the newly refurbished trails by the water. They’ll be something for everyone to enjoy!
- Wyandanch Village, Geiger Lake Memorial Park: will host a family movie night, with fan favorite the Brandy version of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm. There will be snacks, giveaways and raffles, including bicycle helmets to encourage a safe, sustainable transportation option in honor of Car Free Day LI.
